How we handle your personal data

1. Who we are

Squaddo (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a daily word game operated by Smart Choice Claims Limited (company number 13062399), the data controller responsible for your personal data.

2. What this policy covers

This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use the Squaddo game at squaddo.co.uk, why we collect it, what we do with it, and your rights. It covers anonymous play, creating an account, the daily competition, and our marketing communications.

3. The personal data we collect

If you play anonymously:

Gameplay data: your guesses, whether you solved the word, your solve time, and the date you played.
Technical data: a randomly generated device identifier stored in your browser, your IP address, and basic device/browser information, used to run the game and prevent abuse.

If you create an account:

Account data: your email address, your password (stored securely, in hashed form, by our authentication provider), and your chosen display name.
Verification data: confirmation that you have verified your email address.
Competition data: your daily results linked to your account, used for the leaderboard and to determine winners.
Consent records: whether you gave marketing consent, the exact wording you agreed to (version), and the date and time you agreed.

In all cases: cookies and similar storage used to keep you logged in and to run the game (see section 10).

4. How we use your data, and our lawful bases

To provide the game, your account and the leaderboard — performance of a contract with you, and our legitimate interests in operating the service.
To send you service messages (for example, email verification, password resets, and notifying you if you win) — performance of a contract / legitimate interests. These are not marketing.
To run the daily skill competition and decide winners fairly — performance of a contract / legitimate interests.
To keep the game fair and secure (preventing cheating and abuse) — legitimate interests.
To send you marketing (see section 5) — only with your consent.
To meet legal obligations — legal obligation.

5. Marketing, and forces benefits and claims information

If you give us your consent, we will send you news and updates about Squaddo and FYB, and information about forces benefits and claims you may be entitled to, including information from Forces Compare Limited. We rely on your consent for these messages.

You can withdraw your consent at any time — by using the unsubscribe link in any marketing email, or by contacting us at the address above. Withdrawing consent does not affect your ability to keep playing the game, and does not affect the lawfulness of anything we did before you withdrew.

6. Who we share your data with

We do not sell your personal data. We share it with service providers who process it on our behalf, under contract:

Supabase — provides our account/authentication system.
Cloudflare — provides our website hosting, database, and privacy-friendly analytics.

We may also share data with Forces Compare Limited where you have consented to receive claims information (see section 5), and with authorities or advisers where required by law.

7. International transfers

Some of our providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as UK adequacy regulations or the International Data Transfer Agreement / Addendum) to protect your data.

8. How long we keep your data

Account data: while your account is active, and for 3 months after it is closed.
Gameplay and competition data: 2 years.
Consent records: for as long as we rely on the consent, and for 2 years afterwards as proof of consent.

9. Your rights

You have the right to access your data; to have it corrected or erased; to restrict or object to processing; to data portability; and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these, contact us at alfie@forces-money.co.uk.

You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk, though we’d ask you to contact us first so we can help.

10. Cookies and analytics

We use only the cookies and browser storage needed to run the game and keep you logged in — for example, a stored login session and a device identifier for anonymous play. For visitor statistics we use Cloudflare’s privacy-friendly analytics, which does not use cookies and does not track you across other websites. We do not use advertising cookies at this time.

11. Age limit

Squaddo accounts and the daily competition are intended for people aged 18 and over. The game is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18 for marketing.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we’ll take reasonable steps to let you know.
